Purpose of Overseas Korean Policies
To create an environment where overseas Korean communities and Korea can grow together, contributing to shared prosperity and world peace.
Importance of Overseas Koreans
With 7 million overseas Koreans as members of the global Korean community, they are valued assets and drivers of Korea’s national growth. They serve as bridges between Korea and their countries of residence.
Overseas Koreans have historically been at the forefront of supporting their homeland in times of need, laying the foundation for Korea’s economic growth.
They have also played a key role in enhancing Korea’s relationships with other countries by integrating into mainstream society and influencing important policies in their countries of residence.
Basic Direction of Overseas Korean Policies
Support overseas Koreans in integrating into their countries of residence, helping them thrive as model members of the society.
Foster the Korean identity among overseas Koreans and strengthen their bond with Korea.
Promote exchanges between overseas Korean communities and Korea by building a global Korean network and providing support for visits to Korea.
Provide assistance, in accordance with relevant laws, to overseas Koreans entering or staying in Korea, supporting their stay and adjustment while ensuring their rights and interests are protected.
Support the development of overseas Korean talent, enabling them to contribute to both Korea and their communities abroad.
Conduct exchange programs to promote overseas Korean policies.
Vision
The Overseas Koreans Policy Committee (chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs) deliberates and coordinates major matters to ensure that policies on overseas Koreans are promoted in a comprehensive and systematic way.
The OKA Commissioner formulates and implements comprehensive plans for overseas Korean policies, which are reviewed by the Overseas Koreans Policy Committee.
The OKA Commissioner and relevant central administrative agencies must create and implement annual implementation plans based on the comprehensive plans.
As head of the Working Committee for Policies on Overseas Koreans, the OKA Commissioner manages affairs delegated by the Overseas Koreans Policy Committee.
